Moles, Skin Lumps & Bumps

Doctor-Led Assessment & Safe Removal of Benign Lesions

At The Skin Doctor, every skin lesion is examined by a qualified medical doctor before any treatment is performed. Many benign lesions look similar to more concerning ones, which means a correct diagnosis is essential before choosing a cosmetic approach.

Laser and radiofrequency removal remove the appearance of a lesion — not the underlying tissue — so proper medical evaluation is critical to ensure it is safe to treat cosmetically.

All consultations and lesion assessments are overseen by Dr Chris Irwin, who holds a Master’s Degree in Skin Cancer Medicine and has extensive experience in diagnosing and managing skin lesions. You can feel confident that your treatment plan begins with accurate and thorough medical assessment.

Why Medical Diagnosis Comes First

Skin lumps and bumps can include:

  • benign moles

  • seborrhoeic keratoses

  • skin tags

  • cherry angiomas

  • cysts

  • lentigines

  • other age or friction-related growths

Some lesions appear harmless but can resemble:

  • melanoma

  • basal cell carcinoma

  • squamous cell carcinoma

  • atypical naevi

This is why removal should always follow a medical examination.
At The Skin Doctor, we only remove lesions that have been confidently assessed as benign.

If a lesion requires biopsy or specialist management, we will guide you through the appropriate medical pathway.

Your Consultation

During your appointment, your doctor will:

  • take a medical and dermatological history

  • assess the lesion using dermoscopy

  • determine whether the lesion is benign

  • advise whether cosmetic removal is appropriate

  • discuss treatment options

  • provide a detailed quote

  • photograph the lesion if needed for monitoring

If removal is suitable, treatment may be performed on the same day.

Treatment Options for Benign Lesions

Radiofrequency (RF) Shave Removal

A precise method that shaves raised lesions flat with minimal trauma to surrounding skin.
Suitable for:

  • skin tags

  • raised benign moles

  • seborrhoeic keratoses

  • small benign lumps

Laser Removal (Er:YAG / CO₂)

Laser vaporises superficial benign lesions with controlled depth.
Suitable for:

  • seborrhoeic keratoses

  • benign raised bumps

  • selected pigmented or vascular lesions

Laser is used only when the lesion has been assessed as benign and safe for this method.

Surgical Excision (When Medically Required)

Excision removes the entire lesion, including deeper layers, and allows for histopathology.
Recommended when:

  • diagnosis is uncertain

  • the lesion is deep or tethered

  • medical management is required

Excision results in a linear scar but ensures full removal and diagnostic certainty.

After Treatment

You may experience:

  • mild redness

  • light crusting

  • temporary darkening

  • mild swelling

Healing times vary depending on the method used and the location of the lesion.
You’ll receive personalised aftercare instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all moles qualify for cosmetic removal?

No. Only lesions assessed as benign and safe for cosmetic treatment are suitable.

Why can’t I skip the consultation and go straight to laser?

Laser destroys tissue, which means suspicious lesions cannot be evaluated afterwards. A medical assessment ensures safe and appropriate treatment.

Can laser remove the entire mole?

Laser can remove the raised or superficial component. If pigment extends deeper, some colour may remain.

Can lesions come back?

Some benign lesions can recur over time. Your doctor will explain what to expect for your specific lesion.
